July is all about skincare, and this month we're sharing articles, podcasts and more relating to your baby's skin and how you can best care for it. Keep reading to learn more about how your preemie's skin differs from a term baby's, summer safety tips for NICU families, and an opportunity to volunteer as a peer mentor to help other NICU families along their journey.
Preemie Skin in the NICU
Our skin has many important functions. It plays an important role in sensation and tactile feeling (touch is the first sense to develop). It serves as a barrier to water loss in the body. It also prevents irritants and toxins from entering the body and helps with thermal regulation.
But the skin of a preemie is very different from that of a term baby.
Hand to Hold matches NICU graduate parents with families in need of emotional support before, during and after a NICU stay or the loss of a baby. In an effort to provide the most effective support to our families, it's important that our mentors reflect the populations we serve. We are seeking parents of color or those who speak a second language to become mentors.
All mentors are given the tools and training they need to be confident to support families in their journey. If you are a former NICU parent who wants to help families in need of emotional support, sign up today!
Hand to Hold is grateful for the support from Huggies as part of their #HelpingHugs campaign. With their support, we are able to help even more NICU families on their journey.
With 100-degree days on the way, our job is to be both well-informed and well-prepared for what lies ahead. We’ve compiled a few summer safety tips for keeping you and your children cool and comfortable this summer.
Have you joined a virtual support group yet? Support groups are held Monday - Friday, with groups available for current NICU families, NICU graduate families and Spanish-speaking families. Find a group today!
