Since our inception a decade ago, Hand to Hold’s mission has been to provide support to the whole family before, during and after a NICU experience. We strive to be a source of emotional comfort and a trusted connection during a critical time when a family is hurting. This is more important now than ever before.
We recognize that the current events highlighting racial injustice have an impact on the families we serve. In our work with NICU families, it’s important for us to truly understand, acknowledge and advocate to end the racial disparities and healthcare inequities that Black families face.
Here are some statistics that we cannot forget:
- The rate of premature birth for Black women is 50% higher than that of White women. (CDC)
- Black mothers are at a much higher risk of experiencing disparities in screening for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) and in access to treatment relative to White women. (Seleni Institute)
- Black women are three to four times more likely to die from birth complications. (Washington Post).
To the families we serve: We are committed to standing with you, to listening to you, and to taking part in hard conversations with our Board of Directors, staff and community to ensure that we holistically understand your needs as we serve you. We are committed to positioning ourselves for growth so we can reduce disparities in care and support.
You are not alone. If you are a NICU or bereaved parent in need of support, please contact us.
Sincerely,
The Hand to Hold Team
